Stronghold Field Guide
The endgame gate — every world has roughly 128 of them, and you need exactly one.
What is Stronghold?
Strongholds are large underground dungeon structures that contain the inactive end portal frame — the only way to reach the End and fight the ender dragon. Each Minecraft world generates 128 strongholds in concentric rings around the world spawn point: 3 in the innermost ring, then 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, and 36 in successive rings out to ~10,000 blocks from spawn. Each stronghold contains a portal room, a library (the only natural source of cobwebs and enchanted books outside chests), prison cells, fountains, and storerooms.
How to obtain it
Hold an eye of ender and right-click to throw it. The eye flies in the direction of the nearest stronghold and either falls to the ground (recoverable) or shatters in mid-air (10% chance). Triangulate two throws by recording the angle each one flies — where the two angle lines cross is roughly the stronghold location. Dig down at the predicted spot. Inside, the portal room contains a 12-frame portal that activates when each frame holds an eye of ender.
What to use it for
The portal room is the only End-portal source in the game. Activating it requires up to 12 eyes of ender — most strongholds spawn with 2–4 frames already containing an eye, but plan for 12 to be safe. The library inside each stronghold is the only naturally generated source of cobwebs (used for armour stand decoration, sticky redstone, or drops via shears). Library and storeroom chests contain enchanted books, music discs, iron and gold ingots, and the rare diamond.
Tips, tricks & common mistakes
- ▸Throw eyes from elevated terrain — a tower or mountain peak — so you can clearly see the angle of flight. Underground throws clip into walls.
- ▸Triangulate from at least two throw locations 200+ blocks apart. The wider the baseline, the more accurate the intersection.
- ▸Bring at least 14 eyes of ender for the End trip — 12 for the frame plus 2 spare for the inevitable shatters during triangulation.
- ▸Stronghold libraries always contain enchanted books and chests with diamonds. Loot every library before activating the portal.
- ▸Place water on the portal-room ceiling before activating the portal to prevent silverfish (which spawn from stronghold stone bricks) from swarming you mid-fight.
