Are plugins compatible with vanilla clients?

Do I need to be technical to install plugins?

Basic plugin installation is straightforward: drop the JAR file into your server's plugins/ folder and restart. Configuring permissions and tuning each plugin can be more involved — most plugin pages link to the author's setup guide.

What server software should I use?

For most servers, Paper is the recommended choice — it is a high-performance fork of Spigot with extra optimisations and is compatible with the vast majority of plugins. Folia is the experimental multi-threaded version of Paper.
