DarkAroundMe

DarkAroundMe replaces the vanilla lightmap calculations to render unlit areas as absolute darkness. Standard "Moody" brightness often leaves terrain visible at midnight, but this mod crushes ambient light to create a pitch-black void.

The lighting engine distinguishes between ambient skylight and artificial block light. This ensures that caves and nights remain void-black regardless of your gamma or brightness settings, while torches, lanterns, and lava sources retain their full vanilla brightness and visibility.

Compatibility

This mod is built for NeoForge 1.21.1 and has no dependencies.

For the best experience, it is highly recommended to use this alongside Immersive Lanterns and Sodium Dynamic Lights. When configured correctly, belt-equipped lanterns will push back the darkness dynamically, making light sources a gameplay necessity rather than a cosmetic choice.

Multiplayer & Configuration

DarkAroundMe features built-in server synchronization. A universal configuration file (

config/dark-common.toml

) is generated on the server, allowing admins to enforce specific darkness levels on all connected clients. This prevents players from bypassing the intended difficulty by adjusting their local gamma settings.
