Stick Field Guide
The single most-crafted item in Minecraft history.
What is Stick?
Sticks are the universal crafting handle in Minecraft. Almost every tool, weapon, and torch recipe requires sticks, and they are also the binding ingredient for fences, ladders, signs, item frames, fishing rods, bows, and banners. They craft cheaply from any wood plank, but the supply chain is constant — a serious base will burn through stacks per hour during major builds.
How to obtain it
The standard recipe places two planks vertically in a crafting grid to produce four sticks. Any plank type works (oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, bamboo, crimson, warped). Bamboo offers an alternative recipe — two bamboo blocks vertically craft one stick — that is slightly more wood-efficient if you are growing bamboo on a farm. Sticks also drop from breaking dead bushes, leaf decay (a small chance per leaf block), and as the rare drop from witches and breaking fletching tables.
What to use it for
Sticks bind into the handle of every wooden, stone, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite tool. They are also a core ingredient in torches (1 coal + 1 stick), ladders (7 sticks → 3 ladders), fences and gates, signs (6 planks + 1 stick), item frames (8 sticks + 1 leather), bows (3 sticks + 3 string), fishing rods (3 sticks + 2 string), banners (6 wool + 1 stick), and arrows (1 stick + 1 flint + 1 feather).
Tips, tricks & common mistakes
- ▸Bamboo is the most space-efficient stick farm — a 9x9 bamboo farm with bone meal produces dozens of sticks per minute with no manual replanting.
- ▸Always craft sticks in batches of four. The recipe takes two planks for four sticks, so stacks of 64 planks convert into 128 sticks in a single click.
- ▸Keep at least half a stack of sticks in your hotbar slot during exploration — broken tools mid-trip are easy to recraft only if you carry the handles.
- ▸Witches drop 0–6 sticks on death — a witch farm doubles as a passive stick supplier alongside redstone, glowstone dust, and gunpowder.
