The blast-proof gateway block — and the slowest mine in the game.

What is Obsidian?

Obsidian is one of the toughest blocks in Minecraft. It has a hardness of 50, takes about 9.4 seconds to break with a diamond pickaxe (15.7 with iron, even longer with netherite's tiny speed bonus), and a blast resistance of 1,200 — high enough to survive every explosion in the game except the wither's spawn blast and a charged creeper at point-blank range. Obsidian is the only Overworld block that can frame a Nether portal, which makes it a hard requirement for entering the Nether and progressing past iron tier.

How to obtain it

Obsidian forms when flowing water touches a still lava source block. The standard farming method is the "lava-cast" technique: pour a bucket of water on top of a lava lake, wait for the surface to convert, then mine. Naturally generated obsidian is found around ruined portals (in surface and Nether variants), in the End at the central pillar arrangement, and as rare end-city loot. Mining requires a diamond or netherite pickaxe — any lower tier consumes durability without dropping the block. Crying obsidian, the purple variant, drops only from piglin barters or generates inside ruined portals; it cannot be lava-cast.

What to use it for

Obsidian frames every Nether portal — a minimum of 10 blocks per portal in a four-by-five frame. It also crafts enchanting tables (4 obsidian + 1 book + 2 diamonds), ender chests (8 obsidian + 1 eye of ender), beacons (require a base of cheaper materials but the beacon itself sits on a 3-obsidian + glass + nether-star recipe), and respawn anchors (6 crying obsidian + 3 glowstone). It is also the standard PvP defensive block — explosion-proof walls in factions/anarchy servers are almost always obsidian.

Tips, tricks & common mistakes

  • A diamond pickaxe with Efficiency V breaks obsidian in about 4.7 seconds — half the unenchanted time. Always enchant your dedicated obsidian pick.
  • Carry a water bucket when lava-casting. A single misplaced lava source becomes obsidian instantly when water hits it from above.
  • Mine ancient cities at minimum with an Efficiency V Unbreaking III netherite pickaxe — sculk and obsidian are dense enough to drain a fresh pick.
  • Crying obsidian cannot frame a Nether portal but it can build a respawn anchor — the only way to set spawn inside the Nether.
  • Obsidian is the standard anti-griefing block on multiplayer survival servers because it survives TNT and creeper explosions trivially.

Obsidian — Frequently Asked Questions

No. Obsidian requires a diamond or netherite pickaxe. Mining with iron, stone, or wood will play the breaking animation for several seconds and consume durability, but the block will never drop. Always confirm pickaxe tier before attempting to mine obsidian.
