Ender Dragon Field Guide

The credits-roll boss — and the gateway to elytra and end cities.

What is Ender Dragon?

The ender dragon is Minecraft's primary boss mob and the encounter that triggers the end credits when defeated. It spawns once per world inside the central island of the End dimension, perched on top of a black bedrock fountain surrounded by ten obsidian pillars topped with end crystals. Defeating the dragon awards 12,000 XP (instantly raising a level-1 player to level 68), spawns a permanent end portal back to the Overworld, and unlocks the rest of the End — the outer islands where end cities, end ships, and elytra are found.

How to obtain it

Reaching the End requires completing three preliminary steps: (1) build a Nether portal to enter the Nether and farm at least 12 blaze rods from a Nether fortress, (2) farm at least 12–16 ender pearls from endermen in the Overworld or Nether, (3) craft eyes of ender (1 ender pearl + 1 blaze powder per eye) and follow them to the nearest stronghold. The stronghold contains an inactive end portal frame; activating all 12 frame blocks with eyes of ender opens a permanent portal to the End. The dragon fight begins the moment you arrive.

What to use it for

Killing the dragon drops a single dragon egg on top of the end portal — a trophy block that can be moved with a piston or teleported with two torches. The dragon also drops 12,000 XP on first kill (500 XP on subsequent respawns) and unlocks access to the outer End islands. The fight itself is the prerequisite for elytra (the only flight item in the game), shulker shells (for the only inventory-portable storage block), and end city loot.

Tips, tricks & common mistakes

  • Destroy all ten end crystals first — they heal the dragon and will reset the fight if you ignore them. Use snowballs or eggs (both deal damage to crystals from a safe distance) to break the caged ones; throw a normal arrow or shoot directly for the open ones.
  • Bring a bow with Power V Infinity, at least one bucket of water (for cushioning enderman teleports), a stack of cobblestone (for emergency pillars), and a full set of enchanted diamond or netherite armour. Slow Falling potions are optional but huge.
  • Stay off the central island as much as possible. The dragon's breath attack on the fountain area is a sustained 2-heart-per-second damage zone that catches players between teleports.
  • Bring a pumpkin to wear on your head to disable enderman aggro from accidental eye contact — the End is full of endermen and the fight is unwinnable if 30 of them join in.
  • After the kill, place an end crystal on each of the four bedrock corners of the exit portal to respawn the dragon — useful for repeat XP runs and dragon egg trophies.

Ender Dragon — Frequently Asked Questions

Place four end crystals on the four bedrock corners of the dragon exit portal. The dragon will respawn instantly, the obsidian pillars will regenerate with end crystals, and a normal fight begins. Each respawn drops 500 XP and a single dragon head, but no additional dragon eggs.
