Diamond Field Guide

The mid-game milestone that unlocks the Nether and beyond.

What is Diamond?

Diamond is one of the most sought-after raw materials in Minecraft. It is the resource that gates the jump from iron-tier survival into late-game content: a full set of diamond armour and tools is the prerequisite for safely entering the Nether to mine ancient debris, and a diamond pickaxe is the only Overworld tool capable of breaking obsidian. Beyond gear, diamonds are the currency of villager trades with toolsmiths, weaponsmiths, and armourers, and they remain the only ingredient that can be smithed into netherite equipment using a smithing table.

How to obtain it

Diamonds spawn as diamond ore deep underground. In the current generation they are most common between Y=-58 and Y=-53, and are exclusively found in stone, deepslate, or as deepslate diamond ore — never in dirt, gravel, or air-exposed walls. Strip-mining at Y=-58 with an iron or better pickaxe produces the highest yield per minute; branch mines spaced three blocks apart cover the most volume without overlap. Diamond ore also generates in mineshaft and stronghold corridor chests, in buried treasure (each chest contains 1–2 with a 59% chance), and as occasional loot in end city, ancient city, and woodland mansion chests. You cannot smelt or craft diamonds — they must be mined or looted.

What to use it for

Diamonds craft into the full diamond tier of tools, weapons, and armour. They are also the only material accepted by the smithing table when upgrading diamond gear to netherite using a netherite upgrade smithing template. Beyond gear, diamonds craft enchanting tables (1 book + 4 obsidian + 2 diamonds), jukeboxes (8 planks + 1 diamond), and fireworks star variants. Villager toolsmiths, weaponsmiths, and armourers buy diamonds for emeralds at journeyman tier, making strip mines a stable emerald pipeline.

Tips, tricks & common mistakes

  • Use Fortune III on a diamond pickaxe to multiply diamond drops per ore (1–4 diamonds per block instead of 1).
  • Carry a water bucket — diamonds spawn near lava, and a quick water pour can save your inventory from a lava swim.
  • Mine deepslate diamond ore with an iron pickaxe at minimum. A stone pickaxe will destroy the block without dropping anything.
  • Bring an Unbreaking III iron pickaxe as your primary mining tool and reserve diamond pickaxes for obsidian and ancient debris only.
  • Cure a zombie villager near your strip mine to drop trade prices on diamond gear by ~70%.

Where this fits in your progression

After your first stack of diamonds, prioritise an [enchanting table](/items/enchanting-table) and a [diamond pickaxe](/items/diamond-pickaxe) so you can break [obsidian](/blocks/obsidian) and build a [Nether portal](/structures/nether-portal). The next milestone is [netherite ingot](/items/netherite-ingot), which requires four diamond items to upgrade.

Diamond — Frequently Asked Questions

Y=-58 is the statistical sweet spot in the current world generation. Diamond ore distribution peaks between Y=-64 and Y=-53, but Y=-58 sits comfortably above bedrock (which generates randomly between Y=-64 and Y=-60), so you avoid wasting picks on indestructible blocks while still hitting peak ore density.
