Understanding Nether Portals

Nether Portals are your gateway to the dangerous but resource-rich Nether dimension. This guide covers everything from building your first portal to creating complex portal networks for efficient travel.

Building Your First Nether Portal

Materials Required

Obtaining Obsidian

Obsidian forms when water touches a lava source block. Methods to obtain it:

  1. Diamond Pickaxe Mining - Find natural obsidian or create it by pouring water on lava lakes
  2. Speedrun Method - Use a bucket to place lava, then water, without a diamond pickaxe (slower but no diamond required)
  3. End Portal Frames - The End has abundant obsidian pillars

Building the Frame

The portal frame must be:

  • Minimum 4 wide × 5 tall (interior space: 2×3)
  • Maximum 23 wide × 23 tall
  • Made entirely of Obsidian
Standard Portal (10 obsidian - no corners):

    [O] [O]
    [O] [O]
    [O] [O]
[O] [O] [O] [O]

O = Obsidian

Portal Linking & Coordinates

This is where most players get confused. Here's how portal linking actually works:

The 1:8 Ratio

Every 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld.

This means:

  • Walking 100 blocks in the Nether = traveling 800 blocks in the Overworld
  • To find your Nether coordinates: Overworld X/8, Overworld Z/8
  • Y coordinates don't follow this ratio

Calculating Linked Portal Locations

Portal LocationOverworld CoordinatesNether Coordinates
Example 1X: 800, Z: 400X: 100, Z: 50
Example 2X: -1600, Z: 2400X: -200, Z: 300
Formula-Overworld ÷ 8

Preventing Portal Mishaps

To ensure portals link correctly:

  1. Build your Nether portal at the EXACT calculated coordinates
  2. Keep Y-level similar in both dimensions
  3. Light the Nether-side portal manually (don't just walk through)
  4. Space portals at least 128 blocks apart in the Overworld

Building Portal Networks

Advanced players use portal networks for fast travel. Here's how to set up an efficient network:

Hub Design

  1. Build a central hub in the Nether at Y: 100+ (above lava lakes)
  2. Connect portals via Nether Brick tunnels
  3. Light paths with Shroomlights or Lanterns
  4. Use Lodestones and compasses to mark destinations

Surviving the Nether

The Nether is dangerous. Prepare properly:

Essential Gear

Hostile Mobs
