Defeating the Ender Dragon

The Ender Dragon is Minecraft's final boss. This guide walks you through everything from preparation to victory.

Preparation

Required Items

• 12 Eyes of Ender - Find stronghold & activate portal
• Diamond/Netherite Armor - Protection IV recommended
• Diamond/Netherite Sword - Sharpness V preferred
• Bow - Power V, Infinity for shooting crystals/dragon
• Pickaxe - For escaping obsidian towers
• Blocks - 64+ for climbing towers
• Food - Golden apples, golden carrots

Recommended Items

• 7+ Beds - For explosive damage (speedrun strat)
• Ender Pearls - Fast travel, emergency escape
• Slow Falling Potions - Survive dragon knockback
• Water Bucket - MLG water against fall damage
• Pumpkin - Prevents Enderman aggro when worn

Finding the Stronghold

Using Eyes of Ender

1. Craft Eyes of Ender (Blaze Powder + Ender Pearl)
2. Throw an eye - it floats toward the stronghold
3. Follow the direction (eyes can break, bring extras)
4. When the eye goes down, dig beneath you
5. Find the stronghold library/portal room

Activating the Portal

Place Eyes of Ender in all 12 End Portal Frames. The portal activates and turns starry.

Warning: This is a ONE-WAY trip until you defeat the dragon. Bring everything you need!

Entering The End

You spawn on a small obsidian platform. The End consists of:

• Central island with obsidian towers and the Dragon Egg
• End crystals on top of towers, healing the dragon
• Endermen everywhere - don't look at them!

Destroying End Crystals

The dragon heals from End Crystals. You MUST destroy all crystals first.

Caged Crystals

Some crystals are surrounded by iron bars. You must:

1. Build up to the tower
2. Break bars with pickaxe
3. Destroy crystal (it explodes!)

Fighting the Dragon

Dragon Attack Patterns

• Fly-by - Dragon swoops, dealing contact damage
• Fireball breath - Lingering damage cloud (MOVE AWAY)
• Perching - Dragon lands on fountain, vulnerable phase

Strategy 1: Traditional Fight

1. Destroy all crystals first
2. Shoot dragon with bow during flight
3. When dragon perches, attack head with sword
4. Avoid breath attack area
5. Repeat until dead

Strategy 2: Bed Explosions (Fast)

Beds explode in The End, dealing massive damage:

1. Wait on fountain for dragon to perch
2. Place bed near dragon's head
3. Right-click to detonate
4. 4-5 beds kills the dragon

Caution: Explosions hurt you too! Stand back slightly when detonating.

Victory Rewards

When the dragon dies, you receive:

• 12,000 XP - Enough for ~68 levels from 0
• Dragon Egg - Collectible trophy (only 1 per world)
• End Gateway - Portal to outer End islands
• Exit Portal - Returns you to Overworld spawn

Pro Tips

• Wear a Pumpkin on your head to prevent Enderman aggro
• Bring Ender Pearls for quick escapes
• Slow Falling potions prevent death from dragon knockback
• Water bucket can save you from fall damage (MLG water)
• Kill Endermen for extra pearls if needed
