How to Build a Useful Farm

Farming in Minecraft can be one of the most useful tools that you can learn to, properly, take advantage of. Having a well-made farm can provide you with a reliable food source. It can keep you from always having to stop what you are doing, so that you can find animals to kill, but this does not mean that animals cannot be used as food.

Animal Breeding

Animals can be farmed very easily. All you need is a fence and two of the same animal types in order to have a constant supply of meats, eggs, and wools. Just like you, animals need to eat. When choosing a pen to use, keep in mind that if you do not make it two blocks high, or higher, monsters will just jump over it. A fence cannot be, easily, jumped over by monsters. Torches, put around the perimeter, can prevent mobs from spawning on your farm. If you would like to have an underground farm, there is a way to get animals downstairs with ease. This is also helpful if you need more animals, or if there is a giant herd you want far away. It seems pretty simple, but a train track can make this process only take a few minutes. The only time consuming part is building the track, but you only have to do it once. First, build your track. Put once end inside of your pen, and then lead it toward the animals. Next, you need a bunch of mine carts. Now all you need to do is to put the mine carts on the track, lead the animals to them with food, and then use a furnace, filled with coal, as a caboose. This will send them straight into your pen. The animals simply have to walk into a mine cart, so that they can ride. Chickens eat plain seeds, pigs eat carrots, sheep and cows both eat wheat. In order to make the animals follow you into the pens, simply equip whatever food they eat by putting it into your hand. The animals will follow you like a stalker, even to their own demise. When you feed two animals, near each other, they will kiss, and a new baby animal will be born. As long as you have two animals, of the same type, you will never go hungry!

Food Types

There are five types of crops that you can grow, and consume for health, in Minecraft. They are; wheat, carrots, potatoes, pumpkins and melons. Wheat can be used to bake items such as bread, cake, and cookies. You can bake pumpkin pie with raw pumpkins.

  • Bread restores two and a half health
  • Carrots restore two health
  • Pumpkin pie restores four health
  • Melon slices restore one health
  • Potatoes restore less than one health
  • Baked Potatoes restore three health

Choosing a Place to Farm

When you start a farm the first thing that you will need to do is find land that is flat. Hills will make farming much more difficult than it needs to be. You will also need to have your farm accessible at night, so it needs to be in a building, with a glass roof, protected by fences, or underground. Underground farming is the safest, but if you do choose to make it underground keep in mind that it will require more resources. It also will need a roof that lets in sunlight.

Planting Your Crops

Once you have picked a place to start your farm, you will need a hoe, a bucket of water, and seeds of the crop you want to plant. You will need to till the land by right clicking it with the gardening hoe equipped. Remember, a hoe made of better material is not stronger, it will just last longer. This will allow you to plant the seeds. Between every three rows of crops, you will need one row of water. Once the dirt is watered, its color will turn a darker brown. So, plant three rows of crops, as long as you want, then dig the next row the same length and fill it with water, using your bucket. Once the crops grow, just give each one a smack and they will turn into crops that you can retrieve. They will also give you more seeds to plant. Now just rinse and repeat!
